Fairphone, the Dutch manufacturer focused on making it easier to repair smartphones made from ethically sourced materials, has unveiled its fourth generation of phones.

The Fairphone 4 uses a modular design similar to the company's previous phones. But with more powerful internal features, a five-year warranty, the promise of two major Android updates, and software support until the end of 2025.

The new phone is a huge step forward compared to the older designs and low-power components found in the company's previous phones.

The company aspires to produce a more ethical alternative to modern smartphones. This means making an ethically sourced device using sustainable materials before providing program support and warranty to make it usable for as long as possible.

Although the company guarantees program support until the end of 2025. But it has ambitions to expand this support until 2027.

The company's hardware specifications are usually secondary to ethical considerations. But unlike its previous phones, the Fairphone 4 is a competitor to other mid-range Android phones.

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor that supports 5G networks, and is paired with either 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD.

It is powered by a removable battery with a capacity of 3905 mAh, and the screen is a 6.3-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 pixels.

There are two rear cameras - a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera - and one 25-megapixel selfie camera.

The company has provided the main rear camera with optical image stabilization and can record at up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second.

A noticeable downside compared to the company's previous phones is that the Fairphone 4 no longer includes a 3.5mm headphone port, an option that runs counter to the company's customer-first approach.

The company made this decision in order to be able to offer an official IP rating for dust and water resistance, which was missing from the company's previous phones.

Fairphone sells eight phone repair units. They include replacement screens, batteries, back covers, USB-C ports, speakers, earphones, rear cameras, and selfie cameras.

All of these are removable with a standard screwdriver. This means that customers should be able to make many repairs themselves.

The phone is manufactured using responsibly sourced aluminum and tungsten. and recycled tin. and rare earth metals. and plastic (including the back panel, which is 100 percent recycled polycarbonate).

The company has various initiatives to improve working conditions for the miners and factory workers involved in the supply chains for its machines.

The phone is available for pre-order in Europe and shipping starts from October 25. The model with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs 579 euros. While the model that includes 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage is priced at 649 euros.
