Spencer directed by Pablo Larraín; starring Kristen Stewart, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Sean Harris, Jack Farthing, Jack Nielen and Freddie Spry; written by Steven Knight
As her marriage is on the brink of collapse, Princess Diana must spend yet another Christmas with the Royal Family.
The script doesn't have much narrative drive, choosing instead to focus on an in-depth psychological portrayal of Diana and her struggles to cope with the life of constraints imposed upon her as part of the Royal Family.
Director Pablo Larraín crafts some interesting shots but his pacing is a bit academic and some moments a bit over the top with their symbolism.
Thankfully, Kristen Stewart gives an award-winning level performance as the late Princess of Wales, completely erasing any other actress who took up that part before her, and reminding everyone who wasn't yet aware of it that she is one of the best dramatic actresses of her generation.
The movie's other strength is its extensive and stunning attention to sets and costumes that add another layer of authenticity to the piece.
