It has again been quite a while, but the links roll on!
- The Real Roots of Midlife Crisis - It has been a tumultuous last five years for us - having a kid, moving, having another kid, then a brief period of sort-of-normalcy before a pandemic that is still affecting what we do. So it's very hard to separate all of that from how happy I would be otherwise! But this long article about how many people feel worst (happinesswise) in their 40s and things trend up from there. Seems like the kind of thing that just knowing can help you weather better.
- How Does This End? - I've been reading more of these "so, how is the pandemic going to end?" articles, and the conclusion is usually "get vaccinated, Covid becomes endemic but not a major threat". Which sounds pretty OK. We have been doing more things, but it's especially hard to figure out what we're comfortable with given that we have one kid partially vaccinated (yay!) and one kid who likely won't be able to get vaccinated for a few months. But maybe after they're both vaccinated we'll go back to normal? I don't know; every time I think about this I just want to go take a nap.
- How U.S. Soccer Lost Its Hipster Cred - this quote really sums up my feelings: "One of the primary joys of cheering for your country in international sport [...\ is the opportunity to be nationalistic in a (mostly) harmless way."
- Will Real Estate Ever Be Normal Again? - the title should be "Austin Real Estate is Out of Control", and yiiiikes. So glad we aren't in the market right now...
- DeepMind AI cracks 50-year-old problem of protein folding - very cool!
- Read This Story and Get Happier: The most popular course at Yale teaches how to be happy. We took it for you. - eh, I've read most of this other places, but it's nice to have a summary.
- Inside eBay's Cockroach Cult: The Ghastly Story of a Stalking Scandal - this is an insane story and I'm glad some eBay people got arrested. What in the world is wrong with these people?
- Did the Northern Lights Play a Role in the Titanic's Demise? - maybe!
