As employees, we tend to focus only on our job requirements. Some believe that it's ok to stick within their job requirement because it will keep them out of trouble and help them keep their job. Others do their best to excel in their job responsibilities. Only a few would go beyond their job scope and do more than what is expected of them.

So which one are you?

While it is ok to stick to your job description and excel in them, it may limit your chances of getting noticed for a promotion. But, how can you stand out even if you are new to your position?

Here are 10 ways to help you stand out in any job you do:

1 - Know Your Boss And Colleagues

If you want to stand out, you will need to know the people to see your effort. Take some time to ask about your boss and colleagues and study their reactions when you propose something. Bosses and coworkers are humans. Take an interest in their passion, find out what they are like as a person, both at work and, if possible, outside of work. Be genuine in really knowing them.

2 - Share Ideas And Suggestions

Check your current job and see what can be done to improve how things are done and what can be added to the activities or projects you are working on. Don't hesitate to share your thoughts and suggestions with your boss and team and see how your workmates will see it and how it will impact your work.

3 - Don't Stay Quiet During Meetings

It is not uncommon to see two types of people in meetings: those who talk and those who do not. If you find something during the meeting that interests you or you want to comment on it, don't be afraid to speak out. Your team leader or boss will take note of your thoughts and acknowledge you if your suggestions work.

4 - Don't Be Afraid To Learn New Things

Employees tend to lose their enthusiasm over their job as they settle in with the company. But, you shouldn't let yourself lose that enthusiasm if you want people to notice you. Learn more about your position and show that you are willing to learn new skills.

5 - Don't Be Afraid To Help Others Or Offer Your Help

If you want to be noticed, you should be someone that people can go to if they need help and trust for backup. Of course, you have to prove that you know what you are doing and that your support, no matter how small, can push the project forward.

6 - Volunteer When Able

Companies are now doing their part to help with poor communities and the causes they believe in. When your company has these events, don't hesitate to sign up and help out. You will be surprised by the reactions your company heads will have when you volunteer.

Participate in company events that allow you to bond with your team, network with other departments and mingle with management.

7 - Do Not Be Late!

Whatever you are working on, don't be late unless there is a reason why you are late. By showing that you can meet deadlines and arrive to work on time, you indicate that you are dedicated to the job and the company.

8 - Own Up To Your Mistakes

If you make a mistake, whether it is on your tasks or failed to live up to your promises, own up to it. Owning up to your mistakes will show that you are brave and ready to learn from your mistakes.

9 - Stay Positive

No matter how hectic work-life can be, don't give up when you feel like everything is not going to plan. You should also avoid joining in gossip and any activity that will push others down. You definitely won't be earning brownie points if you are constantly negative or pouring cold water over others' ideas.

10 - Do Not Speak Ill About The Company

You should also do your best not to speak ill about your company, even if there are things that you don't like about them. If you badmouth them, it may cost you your career and your reputation entirely. The same goes for your coworkers and bosses. Do not badmouth them or participate in gossips.

Conclusion

Don't be satisfied with only the things listed in your job description. If you want to be successful in your career, you will need to be visible for the company to notice your efforts. Try doing one of the ways I listed above and show the company that you can help.
