One day, I encountered a blackout in my house, that means I had total lost connection of electricity from town supply. Next, thing to happen, my mobile phone battery was drying up soon. Where can I charge my mobile phone or a backup battery to be used? I wondered this and learning in my Science lesson the chemical reaction that help to use to provide a battery. Let find out and have fun.

Lemon Battery

  • Remember that Alessendro Volta the inventor of Battery using chemical reaction between two electrodes (one made of copper, the other of zinc will generate a steady current.
  • The slacking plates of copper and zinc is separated by card board soaked in salt and water.
  • Our experiments will need the following:
    • We will use Lemons or squeeze bottle of pure lemon juice.
    • Copper-plated coins such as US pennies
    • One-inch zinc plated steel brackets from hardware store.
    • Test leads with alligator clops at each end
    • Low-current LED for a reminder of the difference between generic and low-current LEDs.

What's an Electrolyte?

  • Whether you know what they are or not, your body uses electrolytes constantly to transmit the electrical impulses that make life possible.
  • An electrolyte is a fluid that contains free ions.
  • They can come from dissolved salts or from acids that donate free positively charged hydrogen atoms – protons – to solution.
  • Because the ions can move around freely, they gravitate toward a source of opposite charge and away from a source of like charge.

Setup

  • Battery is an electrochemical device which base on chemical reactions to create electricity.
  • Lemon juice is made of citric acid that in citrus fruits is an electrolyte that allows electricity to flow between electrodes made from dissimilar metals.
  • Pennies are not made of copper anymore, but they are still plated with a thin layer of copper.
  • Make sure the pennies are not dull and oxidized for the experiment.
  • Zinc is used for galvanized in small steel brackets which can be found easily.

Lemon Test Experiment

  • Cut the lemon in half and push penny into it,
  • Near the penny, push galvanized bracket into lemon.
  • Measure the voltage for the 2 metallic. It should be near ~1VDC.
  • This may be not enough to power a LED, you may need 3 lemons setup to be chained connected to power up.

In summary, this is a simple and fun kitchen experiment for kids to try to work on to understand the science of electricity.
