THE MOKKA VARIETY

The history of this variety dates way back to the 17th Century when most of the coffee drunk in Europe came from Yemen, exported through the port of Al Mokha. As popularity for "Mokka Coffee" grew, more and more producers around the world started growing it. When seeds were taken to Brazil in the early 20th century it naturally
hybridised with Typica into a taller Mokka. From here, seeds were taken to Hawaii for cultivation where they thrived and gained the name Maui Mokka.

Outside of Yemen and Hawaii, Mokka is now a rare variety and only produces very low yields. Due to the height of the cherries, it is difficult to pick and tiny beans make it difficult to process. However, the cup quality from this variety can be outstanding, sometimes even outperforming 90+ Geisha. Despite having about 35,000 plants on this farm, it only produces about 200kg of green coffee per year and this year we are proud to have bought 100kg of this beautiful coffee to share with you.
