Hey coffee lover,
The Philippines is not nearly as famous for specialty coffee as neighboring Indonesia. But it has the potential to be just as renowned, if not more so, thanks to the unique Kapeng Barako!
The Philippines is one of few countries on Earth growing all four major coffee crop varieties: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. This diversity is a direct consequence of its geography. As an archipelago of over 7000 islands, the Philippines has literally thousands of distinct microclimates and growing environments.
Kapeng Barako is the local name for the Liberica coffee, a rare variety making up less than 1% of global coffee supply. It is know for bold and sharp flavors. Amusingly, barako means "rooster" or "stud" in the local language, as the boldness of the coffee has caused it to be associated with masculinity.
