The Federal Reserve announced yesterday that it's raising interest rates by 0.75 percentage point, bumping the federal funds rate to a target range of 3.0 to 3.25 percent. This is as a result of the high rate of inflation in the U.S., which was last measured at 8.3%. We are all feeling the pain of higher prices and of course hoping for a quick improvement.

The last time U.S. inflation was at similar levels was when Reagan had taken office.

In 1980 inflation was 13.9 percent. By April, it had increased to 14.8 percent. By the late 1980s, inflation went down to a more sustainable 4.6 percent.
