But, based on the meteorological calendar, the first day of autumn is actually today. 2. Astronomical autumn is defined by the Earth's axis and orbit around the sun, while meteorological autumn is a set period of three months, determined by splitting the year into four equal seasons (spring begins in March, summer in June, autumn in September and winter in December). 3. Astronomical autumn changes every year, because it starts on the date of the autumn equinox. The equinox take place twice a year (in spring and autumn), and mark the date that the sun crosses the equator, when day and night become equal length. 4.
