NOTES FROM ORIGIN

"This year we had the honour of planting our very own coffee sapling on our return visit to Cafe Granja La Esperanza in their Field of Dreams. Six years earlier Caspar and I had planted a Pacamara which now stood shoulder high. This time we were given a choice of varieties and although being tempted by the Geisha, the word on everyone's lips was the lush and bountiful Mandela. Years of development have resulted in this stable and high yielding new variety. The Natural that we have in stock sends out those funky notes straight from the cup and delivers gorgeous soft fruit on the palate."

THE MANDELA VARIETAL

The Mandela varietal is a self pollinated selection from Caturra x Caturra, choosing a bean that gave the best characteristics. This was then crossed with Timor Hybrid to provide some disease resistance to rust then again with Ethiopian landrace varietals such as Sudan Rume, Daleco and Villa Sarchi. The offspring from those were then selected for the best performing and the varietal stabilised, with the resultant trees exhibiting both bronze and green tips.
