From Kev, Looking for a Cheap Coffee Machine?

Hello fellow coffee botherers :-),

In this email I'm talking about cheap coffee machines.

Given the way most of us are having our expendable income squeezed harder and harder by increasing living costs, "cheap" is what an increasing number of people are looking for, to help save money on buying expensive take away coffee.

So I thought I'd write a quick email explaining which cheap coffee machine I'd buy in each category, and why.

Best Cheap Traditional Espresso Machine:

While many would say De Longhi Dedica EC685, and I may have said that until recently, I now believe that for many people, one of the entry level Gaggia machines, either Gran, Viva or Carezza may just be the best option.

Why?

Because while the entry level Gaggia machines are similar in many ways to the De Longhi Dedica, one thing that is a pain with these, is finding a bottomless portafilter and a standard basket. Gaggia Direct now supply a bottomless portafilter and a standard portafilter, both with standard baskets, for these lower priced machines!

This really depends on what you mean by cheap. If we're really talking cheap, then I have to say the DeLonghi Magnifica ESAM 4200. See my: blog review | video review.

Do I think it's the best? Not exactly, I prefer Gaggia bean to cup machines, as they make it so much easier to know what dose you're using, and they give a true double shot, and if you have the budget then I think Gaggia Brera & Anima are better, but they're quite a bit more money.

Finally, to discuss pod coffee machines.

I think the best option for pod machines is original Nespresso, simply because of the huge amount of options thanks to all of the compatible pods on offer. This is just my personal opinion, of course.

I'm not a big fan of the newer Nespresso Vertuo, by the way, for several reasons that I will put into a blog post in the near future. Basically I just don't think it's as good, on many levels, as Nespresso original.

Where Nespresso is concerned, the Grind One is a particularly interesting machine, which is actually relatively inexpensive, it looks like it costs a lot more than it does, I think - but you can get cheaper if you go for a machine such as the Essenza Mini, among the cheapest Nespresso machines, and they'll all make the same quality coffee (just depending on what pods you put in).

If you want really cheap where pod machines are concerned, then Tassimo may be of interest, and any of the Tassimo machines including the cheapest (around £30-£50) but I must admit I don't think Tassimo make quite as much sense in the long term. Tassimo, and Dolce' Gusto are a bit like buying a printer, where you pay almost nothing for it and then you find yourself being completely rinsed when you come to replace the ink!

So, there you go :-). Hopefully if you're one of the many people who're thinking about buying a cheap coffee machine, this will be of some help.

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday :-),
