Happy Earth Day, friend!

Every year, on April 22nd, millions of people around the world take part in making the Earth a cleaner and healthier place to live.

At Waka, sustainability and preserving the environment have always been one of our core values. That's because when our founder, David, started the company, he quickly learned that processing coffee produces a ridiculous amount of water waste.

In fact, a single cup of coffee takes about 140 liters of water to grow, process, and transport the beans. That's a whole bathtub of water needed for just one cup of coffee!

So to give back to the environment, we created our "Add Water, Give Water" program. Through this program, we donate a percentage of our profits to charity: water which brings clean drinking water to 26 countries including Africa, Asia, Central, and South America.

Have a great Earth Day,
Jimmy

Quote of the Week

Did You Know?

Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day in the early 1960s

Nelson founded Earth Day after witnessing a massive oil spill that leaked millions of gallons of oil off the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969. He was also inspired by Vietnam War protests to organize a nationwide grassroots demonstration to promote conservation involvement and awareness.

The first Earth Day was on April 22nd, 1970

It purposefully fell between spring break and final exams in the hope that college students would participate. About 20 million Americans showed their support and it soon became the first official Earth Day.

Earth Day went global in 1990, twenty years after the first

It's known as "International Mother Earth Day" around the world.  The United Nations General Assembly came up with the name in 2009, although it never stuck in America.

Scientists use sound to destroy half of liver tumors in rats

Noninvasive sound technology developed at the University of Michigan breaks down liver tumors in rats, kills cancer cells, and spurs the immune system to prevent further spread. By destroying only 50% to 75% of liver tumor volume, the rats' immune systems could clear away the rest.
