Apple released its Q2 2021 earnings report to investors today after the bell, and it was another huge year—so huge, in fact, that investors are concerned it's not sustainable as the world enters a new, later phase of the pandemic.

Revenue for the quarter was $89.58 billion, a record for the March quarter, and up 54 percent year-over-year. The number surpassed investors' and analysts' predictions and expectations leading up to the report. Gross margin was 42.5 percent.

While most organizations have survived the change, some may be wondering if they've done it well. Research published in the Journal of Communication Management looked at how several organizations, including a trade association, communicated during the pandemic.

The World's People Are Baffled By the U.S.

Humans have irreversibly altered Earth in many ways, but one of our longest-lasting legacies will always be our invention of plastics. Plastics are cheap, durable, and easy to produce. They're both a blessing and a curse, and plastic waste has piled up in every corner of the globe. Because most of our planet is covered with water, a huge portion of our plastic waste ends up in Earth's oceans, but you might not realize it by taking a weekend fishing trip. A new report from Vox, inspired by a New Yorker article titled Where Does All The Plastic ...

The Best 35mm Black-and-White Film for Artful Effects

April 28, 2021

When choosing film for black-and-white photography, the biggest things to consider are contrast and grain. Depending on your subject, you might be seeking stark differences between your grays, whites, and blacks, and certain film types will help you achieve that. Others will deliver more subtle effects. Certain film types will also show greater grain definition; this is affected by their sensitivity to light, as indicated by the ISO rating. The higher the number, the greater the sensitivity—and the larger the grain, generally speaking. One more factor to consider is processing flexibility. Some films can handle pull or push processing ...

April 28, 2021

Apple Earnings

Apple this afternoon posted its Q2 earnings report and posted revenue of $89.6 billion and EPS of $1.40. Analysts on Wall Street, meanwhile, were anticipating Apple to deliver revenue of $76.9 billion and EPS of $0.98 per share for the March quarter. Suffice it to say, Apple, per usual, completely surpassed expectations on all fronts.

As a point of contrast, Apple during the same quarter a year-ago posted $58.3 billion in revenue and EPS of $2.55, or $0.63 when you take into account the company's stock split late last year.

Pulled Bodies, Fabric Spirits, and Celebration: Senga Nengudi's Elusive Art Finds Joy in the Everyday

April 28, 2021

In 1978, Senga Nengudi, David Hammons, Maren Hassinger, and other artists—all part of a loose collective known as Studio Z—descended on an area beneath a Los Angeles freeway. Typically frequented by the houseless, the city's freeway underpasses are also normally filled with urban detritus. On that day, however, for a Nengudi-organized performance known as Ceremony for Freeway Fets, it also played host to clarinetists, drummers, flautists, dancers, and more. Hassinger, who had committed to take part on the day of the event, twirled repeatedly as traffic sped by; Nengudi's sculptures made of pantyhose were strewn around ...

Memory Work: Levan Mindiashvili at Marisa Newman Projects

The show's title, "what color is the Black Sea?," a childish jest, alludes to a family seaside holiday when Mindiashvili was three years old, an occasion that the artist has identified as his first memory. For him, the event marks the beginning of consciousness—and self-consciousness—including the nascent moment of his queer identity.

The exhibition features the titular installation with numerous components—including live plants similar to those native to Georgia and a stone from ...

There is no doubt that gun proliferation and gun violence are very closely correlated.  Does the former cause ...

Archeologists Unearth Centuries-Old Mosaic in Israel

April 28, 2021

A team of archaeologists have uncovered an unusually well-preserved 1,600-year-old mosaic in Yavne, a city in central Israel. Dating from the Byzantine period, the geometric mosaic floor design was discovered during excavations of a bustling industrial zone that likely operated during the 4th and 5th century C.E., according to a press release published Monday from the Israel Antiquities Authority.
"The pavement may have been part of a splendid residential building in a wealthy neighborhood adjacent to the industrial zone," the statement reads.
A thick layer of patina—a type of gloss that accumulates on a surface as it ages—initially obscured ...

Without Government Spending, We're Doomed

This post is sponsored by Mommy's Bliss. All opinions expressed are my own.

I remember my wife and I crying in our pediatrician's office after we had finally brought our daughter home after 12 days in the NICU. Harper was born six weeks early.  The nurse in the office said in a strong New Orleans accent, "You both are in here crying over this little baby, but this baby will grow and you will then move on to something else to worry about." At that time, it felt like tough love, but after three years of being moms, ...

Toyota is entering a hydrogen-powered Corolla in a 24-hour race

For some, the allure of hydrogen-powered vehicles is hard to resist. Proponents point first to long recharging times for lithium-ion batteries and then to the speed with which pressurized hydrogen can be pumped into a car as reasons that battery-electric vehicles are doomed to failure among drivers conditioned by decades of fast refueling stops at gas stations. Mostly, those hydrogen-powered cars use fuel cells to generate electricity that powers an electric motor. But internal combustion engines can ...

GFX100S product photography by Dan Bracaglia & Richard Butler

The Fujifilm GFX 100S is the logical next step in the development of the company's medium format lineup: a 100MP sensor in a single-grip DSLR styled body. But don't mistake predictability for complacency: the GFX 100S is an awful lot of camera.

Inside its comparatively compact body, the GFX 100S carries the 102MP BSI CMOS sensor from the original GFX 100 mounted within a smaller, more powerful image stabilization mechanism. By blending technology from the GFX 100 with components ...

The oft-maligned F-35 program has run into another bit of turbulence. 4.28.21 – Expansive awakenings under Sagittarius and Neptune

April 28, 2021

art by Anry

The Moon moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius today following the peak of Scorpionic intensity at yesterday's Full Moon. But there is a deep breath of fresh air with the Moon in a new sign, and a lift of perspective to help the imagination and a broadening of our view.

With no planetary alignments today we ...

The snow hasn't completely melted in the Sierra Nevada, but most of California is already deep into a drought. Meanwhile, in the San Bernardino National Forest, Nestlé continues to pump hundreds of thousands of gallons a week to sell as bottled water.

The folks at California's State Water Resources Control Board aren't amused. This week, they issued a cease-and-desist order, demanding ...

"5 Tricks to Make Laundry Less Agonizing."

April 28, 2021

Doing laundry is the never-completed household chore we all love to hate, and a common pain point for individuals with ADHD.

Laundry rarely rewards with a sense of completion or accomplishment, which is why many people put it off until all the clean underwear is gone. It's also a chore of opposites – it takes sustained effort but not full attention and is, therefore, often "started" but left incomplete.

How can an individual with ADHDdeal better with this undesirable chore? Here are a few helpful hints I share with my clients who complain of clothes piling up, staying ...

"I Hit a Wall During the Pandemic — and I Climbed Over It."

April 28, 2021

If you're feeling psychologically and mentally exhausted right now, you're not alone.
