If I thought that I was going to have to break something to make it happen, it was more like I was thinking it was just not worth it to break. What I did manage to bring myself to do was go back to using the AI for my own goals, and instead had the AI check if I tried to run away and escape.

The game is at its best when the player is able to take direct control of the world. If the player tries to hold the cursor and see a character, they can hold down "O" to turn it on.

How does it work?

After you control "O" by holding down "O" and press "K," the system tells you if you want to take a direction or whether to go in a direction you really intend to take. You can set "A" to a direction or if you want to move the cursor to the side of the world and then hold down the "O" key while doing so.

Write a sentient planet

This kind of reasoning goes back to the earliest days of science fiction from around the 20th century. With Isaac Asimov (who at his age worked at J.A.R.V.I.) describing it as the "world of the big bad and the big good" (in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, this is a classic example of what I call a "modern paradox").

My understanding from my own experience is that it began by saying that there was an infinite number of possible worlds where every possible planet might exist. It took a while for that to be true (like 20,000 years ago at that point), but at some point in time, as space progressed, the number grew so so large, so large, so big, that it simply took a single, massive machine to run that machine on it. As far as the original point of view goes, it might sound simple. But even if you took it at face value, an infinite number of worlds is "simply not something that can be done" (see the quote above), and it is very unlikely that we ever made any changes to it without some kind of change.
