Hey coffee lover,
If you've done any research into prosumer or commercial espresso machines, you likely know the famous E61 group. The Italian thermosiphon design premiered in 1961 (hence the name) and is still among the most popular group heads.
That's pretty special! We don't see that kind of technological longevity much anymore.
The first E61 group head was just a small part of an entire espresso machine, the Faema E61. And that machine was innovative in more ways than one. Not only did it introduce the E61 group, but it was the first machine with a built-in volumetric pump.
It's no exaggeration to say the Faema E61 created espresso culture as we know it.
And they're still making them! And they're still great!
The current iteration of the Faema E61 has been modernized considerably in the last 70 years, as you would hope. But it sports a classic retro aesthetic that calls back to the original. Design is a matter of personal taste, but I think this is one of the most beautiful commercial espresso machines on the market. I'd buy the single group model for my home... if I had a vastly larger budget.
Check it out for yourself in this full...
Even if you could never afford it, it's well worth a read for any espresso buff interested in a historical perspective.
