Hey coffee lover,
The whole pantheon of Italian cafe drinks is confusing. Even if you've mastered latte versus cappuccino, there are the macchiato, ristretto, lungo, and doppio.
And then, of course, there's Starbucks and the like inventing their own versions of the classics to further confuse matters.
As the resident coffee nerd of my friend group, I spend a lot of time fielding questions on what to order when we visit a new cafe. And I would say that ristretto is possibly one of the most misunderstood coffee drinks.
A ristretto is frequently confused with a single shot of espresso, but they aren't the same thing.
A ristretto uses the same amount of ground coffee as espresso but less water and faster extraction. The result is a smaller and sweeter shot that's delicious on its own or as an alternative to espresso in drinks like lattes and cappuccinos.
To learn more about what ristretto is and isn't, including when and why you'd want to make one, read this complete guide to...
...and never be confused again!
