Hey coffee lover,
Coffee certifications are confusing. Peruse your local coffee aisle, and you'll see Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforst Alliance, shade-grown, Bird Friendly, and more. How is the discerning and ethical consumer to know what to buy?
Well, let me advocate on behalf of Direct Trade -- a coffee certification that isn't a certification at all. In the direct trade model, buyers work with coffee producers directly, without the interference of middlemen or certification bodies.
This shorter supply chain means that more money goes to farmers, typically well above the minimum for a Fairtrade certification. It also means better coffee for you, the consumer, as roasters develop close ties with farmers and get access to the best crops.
