LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The reinvention of work |
We're just a few weeks into the new year, and our notes this week centered on all the ways that work is changing. We received so many thoughtful responses from readers. Here are a few of them. On remote versus in-person work: |
- "My employer initially went hybrid with the pandemic rolling through but ultimately became more and more remote. We are a smaller organization. ... They've maintained the remote aspect and have downsized our office space from three suites to just one."- Jenn
- "Just started the transition to being hybrid three days a week. Not going all that well. Losing productivity (my job doesn't care if I am in the office or not)." - David
- "Our company has a mandated three-day in-office policy. It even goes as far as if we are in the field on a dedicated office day, we need to make it up on another day. None of us are very fond of it." - Ron
|
- "Quite frankly, I think previous generations should be proud that they've raised a generation that isn't afraid to make noise and separate work and life. It seems to be something every other generation has wanted to do, but hasn't had the power to accomplish." - Meghan
- "I am 65 years old, and I look back with regret [over] the things I have missed due to my dedication to a job and employer who was not dedicated to me, or my colleagues." - Cathy
|
- "As we all perform some number of routine tasks a program or machine can do faster, ChatGPT, its successors, and AI in general will continue to advance into our daily lives. The larger question is how AI will be constructed to maximize human creativity." - Jeff
- "The truth is, automation pretty much always causes disruption, and while in some cases the overall jobs loss might be small because of new opportunities that come from the new capabilities, individuals can suffer. If we care about people, we need to do what we can to minimize this suffering, while recognizing that the technical progress will continue." - Nelson
- "I find ChatGPT an incredible tool for learning. Working for a large tech company, I often wonder how all of [the] different types of code and technology come together to 'make things work.' ChatGPT is like having every engineer from every team in one room where I can just fire questions off and learn how they interact with each other!" - Joseph
