Hey coffee lover,
Continuing our tour of lesser known coffee regions, we come to El Salvador.
Before writing this article, the only thing I knew about El Salvador was that it was the smallest country in Central America. Then I learned that it is known as "The Land of Volcanoes," and its potential as a coffee growing region was suddenly clear.
Volcanoes and coffee farms are linked all over the world. Volcanoes provide the high elevation and mineral-rich soil needed to grow specialty Arabica coffee beans. Pair that with Central America's topical climate, and you have a recipe for a top coffee growing region. Indeed, El Salvador's claim to fame in specialty coffee circles is that it's the homeland of the prized Pacas and Pacamara varieties.
If you're lucky enough to try good-quality El Salvadorian coffee -- and we suggest three fine examples at the link below -- you'll enjoy a clean and sweet cup. The flavor profile varies with the bean variety and processing method, and there is a surprising diversity for such a small country. Looking for a bright and fruity coffee with citrus acidity? You'll find it. Prefer rich and chocolatey with a creamy mouthfeel? El Salvador has that, too!
