What Can Ants Teach Us About Starting an AI Career
Ants are social insects that live in organized colonies or nests.
Within a colony, they communicate with each other using chemical signals called pheromones. One way that ants use pheromones is by leaving a trail as they forage for food. When an ant finds a food source, it will lay down a chemical trail as it returns to the nest. Other ants in the colony can then follow this trail to the food source.
We humans behave a lot like ants. We follow the trails of successful people so we can be successful too.
The strategy works until everyone starts doing it. Then our skills become a commodity, and sometimes we can find ourselves in the unpleasant situation of struggling at our job. We are stuck in an uninteresting job, and our growth has stagnated.
If ants employed the simple strategy described above, they would be extinct by now. Ants are more sophisticated than that.
As a kid while watching an ant trail you may have noticed a few ants (maybe 10%) do not follow the trail.
They seemed to be lost! They leave a very weak pheromone signal, and so other ants do not follow them.
However, these "lost" ants are crucial for the ant colony to find new sources of food. These "lost" ants help the colony survive when the old sources of food dry out.
The same strategy is followed by people destined for success. A small part of their effort (say 10 - 20 %) is spent exploring new opportunities.
And occasionally this part time effort transforms their lives in unimaginable ways. Some people call them lucky. Others call them an overnight success.
But most naysayers forget the compounding power of small but sustained effort in learning new skills.
