So they sent me one, and I was really pleasantly surprised with simplicity and the quality of it, for the money.
It's very simple, it's a roasting pan with a heat resistant handle, and a manual rotation knob to keep the beans moving over the heat.
It works on gas hobs, electric, and induction hobs, and you can literally just stick it in your kitchen, put some green beans in and have a go at roasting your own coffee.
Unlike some of the other similarly priced options, you can actually roast relatively decent volumes with a pan roaster like this. You can roast a 250g batch in about 10-15 minutes depending on roast profile.
I don't think anyone is expecting amazing, pro level results from a pan roaster, you'll need to be careful to get a nice even roast, you'll need to experiment a bit and spend some time watching youtube videos on home roasting and so on, as I've done when I've played around with home roasting.
But if you've got some spare time and you like the idea of having a play with roasting your own, in my experience, it's fun, it smells great, and even if you're not all that happy with the resulting coffee, there's a real sense of achievement that comes from knowing you're drinking coffee that you roasted yourself!
I will be properly reviewing this, we had actually planned a review video already but we had to change some things around recently with filming, because Covid finally got me!
I'm negative now, thankfully! But I had it for a week or so which put a few spanners in the works, and we've had to move things around a bit so this video will be published sometime in the new year.
I thought some of my fellow coffee botherers may be interested in having a play with home roasting in the meantime, during the downtime many of us have between Christmas & New Year, so I though I'd just send a quick email about this to anyone who may be interested in having a look.
If you go for the full kit, it comes with 250g of green beans but if you do catch the home roasting bug, see my home coffee roasting post for details of where to source lots of green coffee beans.
