Hello trend,
This is Satya Mallick from LearnOpenCV.com.
In 2013, John McAfee, the founder of the anti-virus software McAfee was hiding from authorities, donning a disguise while he was running away from a suspected crime. Interestingly, he was also blogging about his escapade leaving the authorities frustrated. Soon, his location was traced using the EXIF information shared through an image.
What is EXIF Data?
EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format) contains information on image and audio files. It is required by image viewers or audio players to sort the files, display thumbnails, load camera information, and add other functionalities.
Do you have to worry about EXIF data?
Most likely not. Most social media platforms discard EXIF data before sharing but again it is platform specific. For example, Facebook and WhatsApp discard EXIF info from the uploaded image. Whereas, Flickr preserves EXIF.
Also, note that EXIF remains intact when we share files directly such as:
- Email attachments
- Image shared as a document on WhatsApp
- Google Photos etc.
As AI practitioners, it was fascinating to know how much information is captured by a simple "camera click" behind the scenes.
In today's post, we discuss all about EXIF data and build an interesting application that captures the location information from EXIF and renders it on google maps.
Without further ado, let's jump into the post
