It's Never Too Late
True story.
The kid was tied for the last place among 8 quarterfinalists at the National Science Bee (2022) up until the 15th question.
There were only 10 more questions to go. Only the top 3 would advance to the semi-finals.
Last place with a grand score of 0 points was unfamiliar to this 6th grader. He had dominated the qualifying rounds in his group comfortably securing the first place.
But this was the quarterfinals. The best students in the entire United States had filtered up to this level. They were lightning fast at the buzzer.
The competition was intense.
As the father of this kid, I often use this quote -
Winning or losing is often beyond our control. Whether we fight to the bitter end is the only choice we can make.
I don't remember the 16th, 17th, 19th or 24th question in the quarterfinals.
All I remember is the kid hitting the buzzer first, and nailing every question related to math and computing.
He ended up 2nd in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semi-finals. It was a stunning comeback from the last place.
We often see a path to a better life and a better career.
We are eager to take the path but some personal or professional event holds us back, and the dream slips aways.
"I wanted to be X. But I just missed the boat." a 25 year old recent-graduate complains. Missed the boat? You are 25! Forget about boats. Get on the rocketship!
"It's too late to switch careers. I'm too old." you hear the 40 year old say. Too late? Your retirement is 25 years away!
"But I am already dead." the dead man says. Well, yes, it's kinda too late now. Rest in Peace.
For the rest of us, it is never too late.

In case you are wondering, my son, Rohan, was first in his group in the semi-finals. He secured the 3rd position in the Finals of National Science Bee (2022) among sixth graders.
