Generative and Discriminative Models : An Introduction

Hello trend,

This is Satya Mallick from LearnOpenCV.com.

A quick announcement before we jump to our post today. We will launch a Kickstarter campaign for OpenCV for Beginners on May 18, 2021. It is a short, fun, and extremely affordable course.

Interested? Please create a Kickstarter account and click on the "Notify me on Lunch" button on the pre-launch page so you don't miss the special price on Day 1. 1130 people are already following our project on Kickstarter - don't wait until the last moment.

Generative and Discriminative Models

In machine learning and deep learning, we often create two different kinds of models for solving problems

  1. Discriminative Models: As the name suggests, these kinds of models focus on differences between classes to solve a problem. For example, a classifier built to classify dogs and cats is a discriminative model that learns the differences between a dog and a cat.
  2. Generative Models: A generative model, on the other hand, tries to learn the appearance of the classes. For example, a generative model may be used to create a realistic picture of a dog.

In today's post, we will go over many concepts that will help us understand the two kinds of models. You will also get a foundational understanding of generative models.

Today's post is conceptual in nature, and we are not sharing any code today.

As some of you may be able to tell, these concepts will help you easily understand GANs when we cover them in subsequent posts. Yes! we are coming up with a series on GANs.

Creating Digital Twins with OpenCV AI Kit and Unity

In today's OpenCV Weekly Webinar, we will have Gerard Espona of Team Kauda, a participant in OpenCV AI Competition 2021. Their project revolves around a cool robot arm, and Gerard has already posted some awesome video demos of their project such as controlling a jet with their face, and piping OAK-D pose estimation into Unity using the #OAK2021 hashtag.

Topic : Creating Digital Twins with OpenCV AI Kit and Unity
Time : 9 AM Pacific Time, May 13, 2021
Hosts : Gerard Espona (Team Kauda), Satya Mallick (CEO, OpenCV.org), and Phil Nelson (Content Manager, OpenCV.org)
Free registration : Zoom Registration Link

Hope to see you there!

Also, check out last week's episode with Dr. Ye Lu, of Cortic Technology who not only educated us with little details that matter while training models, but also amused us with a demo of Charlie - the little robot that could!
