The EV Adoption Curve

April 24, 2021

Here's a recent edition of the PBS News Hour, covering the part of U.S. President Biden's $2 trillion infrastructure plan that promotes electric transportation.

According to the piece, the path to getting the replacement of internal combustion engines is not without hurdles. Consumer demand remains modest.  About 2-3% of all new cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. are electric. When we compare that with 54% in Norway, we see how pathetic we are in terms of EV adoption.  The plan calls for significant consumer rebates, investment into better batteries, and the conversion of the federal government's ...

This Guy Says Liberals Are Better Informed

April 24, 2021

Whoever created this meme got it right–in the main.  The reason we had four years of Donald Trump isn't our 614 billionaires; it's our 74 million people, many of whom are undereducated, who are easy marks for a talented conman, especially when he's feeding them exactly what they want to hear: Your American Dream has been stolen from you by the "radical left," who let immigrants pour unchecked across our borders, while you pay high taxes that support lazy people with brown skin to stay out of the workplace.

It's a 3800 Km Cable, and That's No Fable

April 24, 2021

Here's news on an ambitious plan to transmit 10.5 gigawatts of electrical power 3800 kilometers undersea from a huge solar and wind farm in Morocco to the UK.   Even at the high voltages contemplated, the company building the link estimates line losses at somewhere between 10 and 12%, though they are justified given the ridiculously low LCOE (conservatively estimated at $0.013/kWh).

Next time someone tells you that renewable energy is expensive, you may want to mention this.

Apple's AirDrop leaks users' PII, and there's not much they can do about it

AirDrop, the feature that allows Mac and iPhone users to wirelessly transfer files between devices, is leaking user emails and phone numbers, and there's not much anyone can do to stop it other than to turn it off, researchers said.

AirDrop uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy to establish direct connections with nearby devices so they can beam pictures, documents, and other things from one iOS or macOS device to another. One mode allows only contacts to connect, a second allows anyone to connect, and the last allows no connections at all.

April 24, 2021

New stimulus check

Believe it or not, the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief legislation that President Biden signed into law back in early March is going to have ramifications that continue to be felt pretty much for the rest of this year.

If you caught our post from Friday along these lines, for example, then you know that something even better than a one-time, $1,400 stimulus check is coming soon. Starting in July, an expansion of the federal child tax credit made possible by Biden's stimulus bill means families are going to start getting stimulus checks totaling as much as $3,600over the ...

Here's what Netflix's CEO has to say about password sharing

April 24, 2021

Netflix Password Sharing

There's an old joke that made the rounds on Twitter a few years back which said that there's only one Netflix subscriber in the world and that his password was being shared by millions of people.

While password sharing outside of family members is technically not something Netflix allows, it's also something Netflix has historically not done anything to stop or even prevent. For the most part, Netflix has seemed happy enough to let people share their passwords far and wide and simply upcharge folks who want to increase the number of screens that can be watched concurrently.

Conservative versus liberal: A knock-down, drag-out climate policy fight

(credit: tanith k / Flickr)

While the United States debates whether or not to put a price on carbon emissions, Canada is getting into the nitty-gritty of how best to do it. The country's ruling Liberal Party enacted its carbon tax back in 2016 to much controversy. Former Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) leader Andrew Scheer decried the tax and suggested it was a blow to national unity within Canada. A few provinces with conservative governments—notably Ontario and oil-rich Alberta—took legal action against the tax, claiming that it wasn't constitutional.

Recently, the Supreme Court of Canada decided ...

The legacy of the Modernist movement is a complicated one. Spanning a diverse assortment of fiercely debated sub-categories and styles, the Modernist style has established its presence in virtually every continent. Although the movement's origins may be rooted in Europe and the U.S, outside of the Eurocentric canon architects have redefined and re-established what the definition of a "Modernist" building is. In Sri Lanka, for example, architect Geoffrey Bawa's sensitive, nature-inspired architectural responses gave rise to the "Tropical Modernism"label. Over in the African continent, ...
