Garmin's Venu 2 fitness tracker is a knockout |
Today is a good day to move, according to Garmin, which just announced the launch of the Venu 2 series of GPS smartwatches.
There are two options to choose from: the Venu 2 and Venu 2s -- both of which are packed with features to help you take full control of your physical health.
The Venu 2 has a battery life up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, although the life span is cut much shorter when it's in GPS mode — only eight hours for the Venu 2 and seven hours for the Venu 2S. It also juices up impressively fast. Just 10 minutes will add one full day's charge to the Garmin Venu 2; a full charge will take around four hours.

You'd be hard-pressed to think of a material that's more contentious than ivory, the hard, white material most commonly taken from the tusks of elephants. Outlawed around the world since 1989, ivory continues to be an extremely valuable commodity, with poachers able to command $1,500 for a single pound of the stuff. In Keith Somerville's mournful history of the subject, he refers to it as the "elephant economy," and notes how — despite the ban — it has continued to drive elephants dangerously close to the point of extinction.
But scientists in Austria might have something that could help. They've developed an artificial ivory-like material called "Digory," a portmanteau of the words "digital" and "ivory." Made of synthetic resin and calcium phosphate particles, it's processed in an extremely hot liquid state, and can then be hardened in a 3D printer using UV rays, printed to whatever shape is desired. Displaying similar optical and mechanical to real ivory, the Digory can then be polished up and color-matched so that it looks almost indistinguishable from the material it's based upon.
In other words, it could be a game-changer for anti-poaching efforts. |

NASA's Perseverance rover scored a first on Tuesday when it successfully converted the red planet's thin, carbon-dioxide rich atmosphere into oxygen. This marks the first-ever production of oxygen on another planet and takes us one step closer to launching a crewed mission to Mars.
This is important on two counts. First, it offers a path to creating breathable air for future astronauts visiting Mars. Second, it provides engineers with useful data on how to isolate and store oxygen on the planet, a process essential for launching rockets off the Martian surface for when it's time to return to Earth. |
