A little over a decade ago, in 2009, the Japanese spacecraft Kaguya spotted something interesting during a flyover of the moon's Marius Hills region. What initially looked like a deep crater appeared, on closer inspection, to be a hole. This cavity is believed to be a lava tube, created by lava billions of years ago, now empty. At the bottom of this hole, so the theory goes, is a system of tunnels forming a cave network under the lunar surface.
Exploring that cave network beneath the Marius Hills skylight is what the DAEDALUS robot is designed to do -- but it doesn't look anything like the rovers you're probably used to seeing. Instead, the DAEDALUS mission plans to use a 46-centimeter, transparent spherical robot in which the scientific instruments, such as the sensors and power supply, are contained in a protective sphere made of a material like plexiglass. It would move by rolling, with motorized components inside that are able to shift the center of mass. |

When it comes to creating spectacles in the sky, ore and more events are swapping out fireworks for drone-based light shows. Such shows are growing increasingly ambitious, too, with a recent one in Shanghai, China, setting a new world record for the number of drones used.
Marking the official launch of Hyundai's luxury Genesis brand in the Chinese market last month, the show saw 3,281 LED light-equipped drones head skyward, with the iconic Shanghai skyline adding its own splash of color to proceedings. Check out the full video here. |

LG has officially confirmed that it's exiting the global mobile phone business. The Korean company announced the news on Monday, April 5, local time, saying that leaving the "incredibly competitive" mobile phone sector will enable it to focus on growth areas "such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services."
The wind-down of its mobile phone business is likely to be completed by July 31, although the company said that some of its existing phone models will still be available while stocks last. |
