This is how I fixed local .swf file playback in the web browser on Linux Mint 17. This fix should work on Linux distributions that rely on freedesktop in their particular desktop environment. Gnome, Unity, and Cinnamon all rely on freedesktop as far as I can tell. This fix worked for me on Linux Mint 17 as of late July 2014. As far as fixing this on other Linux distributions, the file that needs to be edited and the methods could differ depending on the desktop environment.
